Surface Texturing and Thin Film Characterizations
Title: Surface Texturing and Thin Film Characterizations
Date: September 14, 2017
Location: CC405, Fourth Floor, Thailand Science Park (TSP)
Abstract:
Surface texture of materials is highly important, from either functional or performance point of view. The study and research on surface texture are driven by fundamental understanding requirement, quality assurance and economics requests. Since surface texture is so critical for so many industrial applications, such as in automotive, electronics, advanced materials, printing, medical and optics, the measurement and analysis for surface texture are evolved in a long history. From contacting stylus profiling to non-contact optical profiling, even down to nm lateral resolution method such as scanning probe microscopy, Bruker provides the broadest solution for 3D surface texture characterization. The first half part of this presentation will show how the surface texture is measured and how the data are analysis, such as filtering raw data to waviness and roughness. The different texture parameters and their applications on specific cases, such as wear, sealing, lubrication, will be discussed. The second half part of this presentation will introduce why the thin film mechanical properties are important and how the instrument indentation test is invented. Nano-indentation test for different applications will be discussed. In the meantime, the film/substrate adhesion is crucial for the performance and reliability of film/coating. Scratch test to evaluate adhesion will be introduced and typical test methods and results will be presented.
